Cicada-X ™ Tree & Shrub Protective Netting against this year's Brood

Periodical cicadas can cause tree “flagging”, which occurs when the females deposit eggs in small grooves they make in branches. If enough females choose the same branch, the branch will turn brown and die.  For most adult, healthy trees, the cicadas actually can benefit your garden, because they choose the weakest branches of the trees to lay their eggs, acting as natural “pruners”. But for newly planted saplings, vulnerable trees, and prized trees & shrubs that are especially worth protecting, periodical cicadas could cause irreversible damage.

  • One net measuring 14' x 14' - (196 square feet)
  • 3/8 " mesh size blocks cicadas and locusts
  • UV & weather-resistant plastic netting
  • Does not restrict honeybees and many other important pollinators

Different cicada broods come in different sizes, and annual cicadas are generally larger than the periodical broods. No matter which brood you are dealing with, follow the pinky finger "rule of thumb" to determine whether or not you have the best net size to block cicadas. Cicada-X is designed against cicadas and locusts, while not being too restrictive for many pollinators.

  • If your thumb can fit thru the mesh, your net is too big to stop cicadas.
  • If your entire pinky finger can easily fit thru the mesh, your net could potentially be too big, and some cicadas might make it through your cicada barrier.
  • If you cannot fit your whole pinky finger thru the mesh, you have the best net to stop cicadas.
