August and September bring the heaviest harvests of the year and the heaviest pressure from wildlife. As berries plump up and tomatoes deepen in colour, birds, deer and small rodents move in on the crop.
Protecting a late-summer harvest does not require harming the animals causing the damage. Distraction, deception and taut physical barriers keep wildlife out of the fruit and unhurt at the same time.
Wild food sources dry up through September, which pushes deer off their usual forage and toward residential shrubs, trees and gardens. Birds concentrate on the fruit that ripens last, so grapes, blueberries and blackberries take the heaviest losses in the final weeks before harvest, when the crop is most valuable.
Three tactics do most of the work: give animals somewhere else to go, keep deterrents unpredictable, and install barriers tight enough to be safe.
- Offer water away from the crop. Animals often raid a garden because they are thirsty rather than hungry. A clean birdbath on the opposite side of the yard gives them somewhere to hydrate.
- Move deterrents every 2 to 3 days. A decoy that sits in one spot for weeks stops working, because animals learn it never moves.
