Sweet corn can survive weeks of summer trouble, then disappear in one night. The stalks looked ready yesterday. By morning, several lie bent across the row, the husks hang open, and the best ears have been eaten.
Raccoons become interested just as the kernels fill with milky juice. The crop is ready for your table and easy for a raccoon to pull down. Once one finds the patch, another unprotected night can cost far more corn.
The plain answer is to protect sweet corn before the ears reach the milk stage. Clean up other food sources, identify the route into the garden, and use a properly installed barrier as the main defense. Scare devices can add pressure, but they should support exclusion rather than replace it.
Was the Damage Really Caused by Raccoons
Raccoon damage usually looks rougher than insect or bird feeding. Look for pulled-down stalks, tangled rows, peeled husks, partly eaten cobs, and five-toed tracks. Iowa State University Extension describes the same combination as strong evidence of raccoon activity.

Do not rely only on the date printed on the seed packet. Temperature, variety, soil moisture, and pollination can shift maturity. Check several ears.
